Thyme Plant Information

Thyme is an aromatic herb that is commonly used in cooking and for medicinal purposes. It is a popular ingredient in many cuisines around the world including Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and European cuisine. Thyme highly attracts bees. Honeybees that forage in thyme farms produce a high quality honey of strong unique flavor. Thyme honey is one of the premium types of honey and can be marketed at high prices.

Thyme Growing Conditions

  • The plant needs full sun exposure and prefers warm and moderately dry climates, mild winters and sunny summers. It will thrive where average temperatures of 68-86°F (20-30°C) during spring-early summer are common. Soil temperatures above 65°F (18°C) favor growth and regeneration after harvest.
  • Thyme plants can grow in all well-drained soils. They can withstand pH from 5 to 8. The best yields are often achieved in calcareous light soils with pH close to 7 and with very good drainage. Drainage is very important, as the plant often suffers from root rots.

Thyme Fertilizer Requirements

Thyme is famous for growing in non-fertile soils that are unsuitable for most other crops. According to some old farmers, thyme and lavender are two of very few crops that do not need any fertilizer.

Thyme growers often add 8-12 tons of well-rotted manure per hectare and plow well before they transplant the young seedlings.

Thyme Harvesting

Most thyme farmers do not harvest during the first year of plant establishment. They can get good yields from the second up until the sixth year. After six years, commercial thyme growers plow and destroy the plants so as to rotate the crop or plant new seedlings.
